REQUIREMENTS AND RULES FOR ADMISSION INTO DRUM
The focus of admission will be on rudimental competence. Video entries must score 80 and 87 respectively for Silver and Gold Membership. All members will receive an exclusive DRUM patch signifying membership, and a membership card. Anyone may enter, there is no age limitation. The entry fee is $15. Requirements: 1.) Open and close the following rudiments: The Double Stroke Roll The Single Stroke Roll Single Paradiddle The Flam The Ruff (Drag) 2.) Play the following supplied exercises:![]()
3.) Applicant must play a short etude of his or her choosing. Etude should not exceed 30 seconds. The etude will be judged on rudimental variety and demand. Rules: 1.1 Each rudiment can be between 2-3 minutes for complete opening and closing. The acceleration time and deceleration time for each rudiment should not differ more than 10 seconds. Required rudiments are to be played in the following order: Double Stroke Roll (without accents) Single Stroke Roll Single Paradiddle Flam Ruff 1.2 Contestants shall await a signal from one of the judges before each requirement. (Not applicable for video submission) 1.3 Two judges will be utilized. Two judges will judge execution and their scores will be averaged. The chief judge will also judge timing. 1.4 Contestants will be judged as follows: Requirements Points Double Stroke Roll 10 Single Stroke Roll 10 Single Paradiddle 10 Flam 10 Ruff 10 Paradiddle Exercise 10 Roll Exercise 10 Singles Exercise 10 Flam Exercise 10 Applicant's Etude 10 Total 100 1/10 will be assessed against most errors, but judges may deduct more depending on the severity of the flaw. Two major type of errors will be accessed on rudiment breakdowns: timing and volume deviations. Applicant's etude will be judged on execution and demand. Accidental stick clicks, hitting the rim, and rimshots are also reasons for point deductions, as well as dropped sticks. Points may be deducted for lack of quality of rudiment at top speed, and if speed of rudiment is inadequate. Minus 2/10 for each execution and timing error in applicant's etude. Points will be awarded for demand and rudimental versatility. Points will be distributed as 5 points for execution, and 5 points for demand and variety, for a total of 10 points. Score range can be from zero to one hundred. Negative scores will not be assessed. Equipment: Contestants will play on any field snare drum, or tenor drum, larger than 13", or bass drum measuring 26" or less, as long as the sound is audible. No other equipment is allowed. Contestants may not audition on practice pads or any other substitute. Timing and Penalties: 1.1 Timing and judging shall start with the first note of each rudiment and end with the last note of each rudiment. 1.2 A 1/10th of a point penalty shall be assessed for each second of overtime (max 3 minutes) or undertime (min 2 minutes) for each rudiment. 1.3 A 1/10th of a point penalty shall be assessed for each second the deceleration of the rudiment differs from 10 seconds of the acceleration time. 1.4 A performer failing to report for competition at the stipulated time shall be penalized 1/2 point for each minute of lateness. A performer failing to report after 5 minutes of the stipulated time will be disqualified. (Not applicable for video submission) 1.5 Two (2) points will be deducted if contestant drops a stick. 1.6 One (1) point will be deducted for each obvious severe break in the requirements. 1.7 Two (2) points will be deducted for the use of illegal equipment.
