Terry Silverlight's Rudimental Exercises For The Drumset
Here are nine 4-way coordination exercises based upon the basic single- stroke, double-stroke and paradiddle rudiments. The challenge is where the accents are placed. Here the accents are divided into groups of four beginning first on downbeats, then on the second 16th-note, and finally on the fourth 16th-note. The second challenge is to consistently play the hi-hat foot on all eighth-notes. It is also recommended that these same exercises be played with the hi-hat foot on quarter notes instead, resulting in nine entirely new exercises. As with any new pattern, begin each exercise slowly and remain at one consistent tempo until it is mastered before increasing speed. Variations are encouraged.
To hear how these exercises apply musically and to hear variations in musical context, check out my new CD "WILD!!" available among other places, www.CDBaby.com and www.terrysilverlight.com. I'm accompanied by Will Lee, Paul Shaffer, Edgar Winter, Hiram Bullock, Chuck Loeb, David Mann, Charles Blenzig, Mike Ricchiuti and John Clark and I wrote all the music.
